My Ambitions As A Writer (Part 2)

So, I told you last week how bored I am with writing. And though I’ve been getting a lot of assignments, there is still something more I could be doing to get myself out there. Since writing part one of this post, I’ve interviewed Alfonzo Hunter and Eric Roberson for, with stories on Floetry, Si*Se and Cruna coming up. And though I’ve accomplished some goals like getting my Mac Mini, exercising regularly (which really does wonders for my writing) and reading a non-school book, maybe not per week but daily. My plants are still alive, and the steady writing gig is…working. But locally the papers treat me like Alicia Keys…they don’t know my name. Here are some options I am juggling:

The Columbus Dispatch
Amid the trials this paper’s faced concerning cultural sensitivity, I did pursue some opportunities to add some Zatarains to their rice pot. I haven’t heard anything yet.
What I Can Do: Follow up! I know better than to just send off clips and not follow up…get it together, girl.

Columbus Alive, The Other Paper
Two alternative papers with slightly different angles: Alive is more arts-oriented, while TOP is more newsy. Alive has a hip hop writer, and TOP kinda doesn’t. I’ve sent clips to both organizations.
What I Can Do: Pitch! They know who I am, but I’m being proactive, not reactive (you learn so much from infomercials). So, I’ve got one story up my sleeve as of now, and I need to keep the ideas flowing. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t be freelancing for one of these papers.

The Columbus Post
I almost have to say the same thing about them that Kanye said about George W. Bush, but I’m not Sally Jesse Raphael, and this isn’t Dirty Laundry.
What I Can Do: Not even an option.

June brings about the possibility of me moving to a totally different market to explore what journalism can do for me. Even though I’m kind of scared and never lived outside of Ohio, there’s not a journalist I know that hasn’t had to move around.
What I Can Do: Find three markets that are good for communicators, compare the cost of living and start visiting. I’ve got plenty of time on this one.

The College Drop-In
I could go back to school, but damn, this is the last option. I love the learning environment, and I love being around serious writers…but I hate tests, and homework and papers. Plus, I’m not sure I am ready for graduate school. I got through undergrad with more Ds than Suzanne Vega in Tom’s Diner (old school reference).
What I Can Do: Look at a couple universities and find a major I would like, just in case I decide to pursue that option.

So, in conclusion, I need to grind more, hustle more and bring more of my ideas to fruition. Nobody’s going to seek me out unless I put myself out there. So all of you Columbus people with some potential entertainment and news stories, get at me…I’m coming back like Martha Stewart.

I like that you actually think of a way to move your obstacles. I feel inspired. Hmm....I have some thinking to do.
