Hey, Hey, Hey! Quote of the Day

"Brown v. Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem. We've got to take the neighborhood back. We've got to go in there. Just forget telling your child to go to the Peace Corps. It's right around the corner. It can't speak English. It doesn't want to speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk. "Why you ain't where you is go, ra." ... Everybody knows how important it is to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't land a plane with 'Why you ain't ...' You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."

--Bill Cosby quoted in USAToday. This from the same man who introduced Fat Albert, Dumb Donald and Mushmouth...

"Waba hapbin Fatba Alburtt?"

"My hebba hurt!"

"Budeep a bubba da beep my lubba. "

- Mushmouth

Yea, but that was a cartoon. If that's the reasoning behind ignorance, cool; but remember there was still just one mayor in (cartoon) Philly. What's the rest of them gonna do? They obviously can't land planes...lol...

Well, if Bill Cosby is so critical of how blacks are portaying themselves, he can look at the way he portrayed blacks in his cartoon...

I don't think any other black cartoon (made by a black person) had characters like that.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Fat Albert...at a time he seemed to have an understanding of the hood. Mushmouth talked like that...but according to the cartoon, he was still a good kid. I think Bill Cosby is so removed from the hood that he doesn't remember the strife and the struggles...all of these people hr lumps int he same category aren't shifless and trifling...

By the way those last two quotes were from the Fat Albert movie from 2004...

I'm feeling you on this Donna. As much as I do believe that there is a serious problem with the education system in America (speaking as a Canadian outsider..lol), and that there is truth in the fact that we at some level have to take some ownership to bring ourselves up because something tells me it ain't a priority of Mr. Bush's agenda (there's no oil beneath the schools right?)
I am getting mighty tired of Bill Cosby's holier than thou attitude. can't even talk the way these people talk these people? These people are your people Bill, like it or not, the real world ain't the Cosby Show

Man you need to read 'Is Bill Cosby Right: or Has the Black Middle Class Lost its Mind' by Michael Eric Dyson. He lays Bill Cosby out for the mess he's been saying all over the damn place. Bill Cosby is a fool. Who is he talking about 'these' people? They're black people who face systematic injustices like inadequate schools, overpolicing, insufficient job opportunities etc. Someone needs to tell his old ass to sit down and shut the hell up. If you don't have any real solutions to the problems (besides that rich person, republican 'pull yourselves up by your bootstraps crap') then be quiet! Seriously the Michael Eric Dyson book is so good. It talks about how for years Bill Cosby refused to discuss race and now he opens his trap to talk about race and it's all about how poor people need to do better. Man, he needs to just shut up.

It's unfair but Cosby is right. I can't get anywhere corporate with Jamaican Hill and Gully talk. For every Li'l John there's a thousand more hustlin burgers, weed, whatever. It's not fair but it cuts both ways. People who speak "proper" have no street cred and there are certain places they aren't welcome. Yes, he made the cartoon and he made money. Then he made the movie, and he made money. But that's entertainment. When you get down to it, so-called standard english is always endorsed. That's not going to change. It doesn't even matter what color you are. red-neck Billy Bob at the Hardees in Arkansas isn't getting anywhere either.

So if we agree that Bill Cosby is right and that standard English has always been acceptable, then what exactly was he trying to portray with Fat Albert?

If it's just entertainment, then why is it okay to endorse people who you can't understand? And why not be on a standard English mission...not a poor people are bringing down the race issue? What "deal" do poor people have that they are supposed to hold up?! It's hyporcritical...

Like Mizz JJ says...who are "these people" he's referring to? What kind of jobs does he think the Junkyard Gang would be qualified for?

And why is it that he can do stuff for entertainment...but athletes and other entertainers can't (in the article, he is also critical of them).

Bill sounds like a crotchety old man to me...

Cosby is something else. I wish he would put his money where his mouth is.

@Chris
Bill Cosby does put his money where his mouth is. He and his wife have established "Hello Friend". Check it out here:

@ Donna
I have never seen a single episode of Fat Albert and I haven't seen the movie either. So I don't know if Fat Albert completely goes against what he's saying now. But consider all his work. He's done some really positive things.
Also, is it possible Mushmouth has a speech impediment?

re And why is it that he can do stuff for entertainment...but athletes and other entertainers can't (in the article, he is also critical of them).
I don't see that in the article. Can you tell me what part you're paraphrasing?

"Basketball players — multimillionaires — can't write a paragraph. Football players — multimillionaires — can't read." This is a quote from Bill's 2004 speech that the other quote came from...there is a link within the story. He doesn't say anything about entertainers...just athletes.

Who are these athletes he is referring to? I don't think there's anything with Fat Albert...but those characters he created are the same "people" he is refering to now as a blotch on the black race.

If we should consider his body of work, then Mr. Cosby needs to consider that everyone who is poor and uneducated isn't choosing to be poor and uneducated. You have to look at everything in context.

W/o soapboxing on this subject, because I'm not a Cosby crusader by any means however. I read his comments in a certain context. While there's plenty of stuff that's wrong with our communities that's based on outside influences. WE HAVE TO TAKE MORE RESPONSIBILITY. Cosby's of the world can't throw money at the ills to solve them. He's doing his part. He sees what he perceives as part of the problem and is doing his part to address it (through charities, education, etc..). I see too many folks who actively resist upliftment and self investment unless it involves material goods. It's not a "you are poor, so you are the problem" issue, it's an issue where too often people's financial status is a crutch and excuse more than it's their circumstance.
I go into schools and into our communities and see materialism galore. Why isn't that investment put into providing for our children what we all deem the poor school systems fail to do or are unable to do in a school day.
I'm not against having nice things, but we make our priorities what they are....Check your post regarding when you started your quest for home-ownership. Was it easy-No. Was it an overnight issue-No. Was it something that you could achieve if you made it a priority? Hell yea. Now u got a crib. It's not that cut and dry but it's far from impossible.
I don't fault entertainers for entertaining, but if you make it "real", then there's a responsibility in that! YEAA!
